Wonder if I am a bad person for not doing enough about Big Problems. Never doing enough, ever.

This is just so, so anger-making. :(
(The link describes the case of Samantha Orobator-Oghagbon, a British woman arrested in Laos for alleged drug-smuggling; she became pregnant in prison- quite possibly she was raped- and if convicted she faces a firing squad.)

11:28 pm - The women of Watchmen rambles
|
I love Watchmen. Love it to pieces. My boyfriend bought me Ultimate Watchmen(basically the novel but with some extra material at the end) and I turned to the character profiles. Each described the character and noted underneath what their 'way of viewing the world' was. I turned to Laurie's profile, and she didn't have one. She had no way of viewing the world, while all the men did. I couldn't help but be a little annoyed, but then I forgot about it.
Then I remembered it again.
I think Alan Moore is good at writing female characters- actually, he's good at writing any characters, but the female ones always seem to particularly stand out. Mina from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Evey from V for Vendetta generally outshinethe men in intelligence and leadership.
Then you have Laurie, the Silk Spectre, and her mother- two of only three female superheroes in the whole book. I like Sally a lot, and think she is far more complex than Watchmen could explore- Sally could have a whole novel of her own. Laurie's my favourite character- why does she not have a world view, an opinion?
I don't think Watchmen is anti-feminist. But let's take a look. Comment with your thoughts if you like- there's no way I've analysed everything.

11:21 am - kindle a light
|
Title: kindle a light Author: sarah531 Rating: R Fandom: Watchmen Characters: Sally Jupiter Summary: Months, weeks, days after the assault she thinks she might be pregnant. She knows her would-be rapist didn't get that far, yet it's all she can think about. The kid would look like Eddie, it would grow up to be like him, and her awful fate would be to love it anyway.

7:48 pm - Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead
|
That was okay, but I have no desire at all to watch it again. The only really exciting bit was the Dramatic Foreshadow at the end. Maybe Doctor Who's the sort of show that works better with arcs, or something.
( Spoilers )
Oh, and a desert planet with three suns? Someone's been watching Star Wars...

Feel really quite hurt and offended when men say (seriously) that they hate women but not so much when women (seriously) say that they hate men. Wonder if this is normal or if I am too oversensitive or hypocritical or something. (I am.)

9:44 pm - in honour of my new tag

Having OCD is sort of weird because it's like...I never know for certain what I'm really thinking. Take religion. I'm an agnostic, but I was brought up Christian...I went to a school with crucifixes in the classroom, said prayers before bedtime, that sort of thing. It was the nice kind of religion (no damning or ranting going on), and I don't really know if my religious upbringing had anything to do with my future mental illnesses, but these days there's a voice telling me to be careful not to offend God. Even though I don't technically believe in him. It doesn't really make sense, you see? Some days I don't like to say "Oh my God," in case it counts as blasphemy, and so on. Or touch...even just brush against...any books lying around that criticise religion.
Despite being not religious.
(Turns out there's a name for this: Scrupulosity.)

Was really quite sad to hear of Natasha Richardson's passing.
Jade Goody died of cancer two days ago too. While I'm sad for her family, I think the whole thing's just...not brought out the best in the media, you could tell they were all just so excited to hear she'd died. On Mothers Day too, I bet they loved that.

Ended up going to see Watchmen again, mainly because it was an excuse to hang out with some friends. Still don't really like it.
It's Islam Awareness Week. Or it is at my uni anyway, I don't know about everywhere else. There was this thing in a tent where you could try on a hijab, so I did. When I left I wondered what it would be like to wear one all the time, and if I'd get treated differently because of it. I thought about the whole white privilege thing. Unfortunately none of these thoughts seem to be able to arrange themselves into coherent sentences. I will post more about that some other time, though.

9:27 pm - 30 Women
|
Okay, this is a challenge antistar_e is doing, and it's a wonderful idea and I want to do it too. :p
The challenge is to write 30 ficlets for 30 women. (I believe orginally it said fabulous women...but some of these people are downright nasty characters.)
